The Swaraj Party was founded by C.R Das and Motilal Nehru. The word "Swaraj" means independence or self-rule. C. R. Das and Motilal Nehru became its president and secretary, respectively. It was also known as the Congress-Khilafat Swarajya Party. The goal was to contest elections to the Central Legislative Assembly so that they could oppose British policies within the councils, argue for reform, and show that these councils were not democratic. The elected members of the Swaraj Party openly opposed the unjust policies of the British Government.
