Taq polymerase used in PCR is a type of heat stable DNA polymerase obtained from a thermophilic bacterium, Thermus aquaticus. The bacterium thrives at 50– 80°C temperatures.

(1) Bacillus subtilis is a soil bacterium commercially exploited for large scale production of many enzymes, like
lipases, proteases and amylases.

(2) Pseudomonas putida (superbug) is a genetically engineered bacterium developed to clean oil spills by Prof. Chakrabarty. This strain is also used in bioremediation of naphthalene polluted soils. It can convert styrene oil into biodegradable plastics (PHA).

(4) Thiobacillus ferroxidans is a chemoautotrophic bacterium that obtains energy by oxidising ferrous and inorganic sulphur compounds and carbon from atmospheric CO2
