Detailed Solution

The Tawa is a river that originates in the Mahadeo hills of the Chhindwara district. It flows through the Betul region and finally joins the River Narmada. In 1958, a dam on the river Tawa began to be constructed (known as Tawa Dam). The construction work was completed in 1978. As a result, agricultural land and forest areas got submerged. It was a very bad phase for the forest dwellers. They began to settle around the Tawa Reservoir and adopted fishing as a means of their livelihood. Their condition worsened when the government in 1994 gave the rights to fish in this reservoir to private companies. These contractors hired cheap workforce from outside and thus forced the villagers of this region to go elsewhere. It was too much. It broke their patience. They decided not to bear the contractors’ atrocities anymore.
