By organising protests and Chakka jams, the Tawa Matsya Sangh claimed the right to maintain their livelihood.
Tawa Matsya Sangh was an organisation founded by fishermen to fight for the rights of displaced forest inhabitants in Madhya Pradesh's Satpura forest. The government permitted private contractors to fish in the Tawa reservoir in 1994. Because they could get inexpensive labour from outside, the contractors threatened the locals with expulsion. The villagers banded together and decided it was time to form Tawa Matsya Sangh and do something to preserve their rights.
