Detailed Solution

The taxes Chauth and Sardeshmukhi were collected by the Marathas. The Marathas' sources of income under Shivaji's dominion were Chauth and Sardeshmukhi. People who lived outside the Maratha kingdom had to pay these taxes. Taxes were viewed as a form of insurance against Maratha's incursions. The Maratha Empire began collecting a daily tax or tribute known as Chauth (Sanskrit for "one-fourth") from the people of the Indian subcontinent at the beginning of the 18th century. The word refers to an annual tax that was supposed to be imposed at a rate of 25% on purchases or products. The Sardeshmukhi was a 10% additional tax. It was an act of homage to the king.
