The teacher tells the class that the highest marks obtained by a student in her class is twice the lowest marks plus 7. The highest score is 87. The lowest score is 40.
Let us assume the lowest score = L.
Now, the highest marks are 7 plus twice the lowest marks.
Therefore, the highest marks = 2L + 7.
But it is given that the highest marks are 87, equating both.
The equation is, 2L + 7 = 87.
Adding (-7) on both sides,
2L + 7 – 7 = 87 – 7
2L = 80
Now, dividing both sides by 2,

L = 802 L = 40

Therefore, the lowest score is 40.
