The Tehri dam construction has been carried out on the river Bhagirathi.
The Tehri Dam is the tallest in India and ranks 12th in the world in height, 260.5 m (855 ft). It is India's largest hydroelectric power project, with a planned installed capacity of 2400 MW. From the 1980s until 2004, Sunderlal Bahuguna, an environmental activist, led the anti-Tehri Dam effort. The protest opposed the eviction of town residents and the adverse ecological effects on the fragile ecology.
