French society had a special feature in its feudal system called the society of estates, dating back to the middle ages. The term Old Regime describes the society before 1789. This comprised the peasants, who made up around 90 percent of the total population but owned little land. Whereas the landlords roughly owned 60 percent of the land cultivated. Only the members of the first two estates, that is, clergy and nobility, enjoyed certain privileges by birth and used to get exempted from paying the tax as well.
