Detailed Solution

The term 'Eelam' stands for 'State'.
Sri Lanka has two major social groups: Sinhala speakers and Tamil speakers. The country became independent in 1948. However, the leaders of the Sinhala community established their dominance in the government by their majority. It alienated and discriminated against the Sri Lankan Tamils. The Sri Lankan Tamils demanded Tamil be recognised as the official language. Furthermore, they demanded regional autonomy and equality of opportunity in jobs and education. But their demands were denied. Consequently, by the 1980s, several political organisations were formed in the country's northern and eastern parts, which demanded the formation of a separate Tamil Eelam, meaning State.
