Glycocalyx is the layer of bacterial envelope present around the cell wall. It is usually made of polysaccharides and rarely proteins. It exists in the form of capsule and slime layer.
(1) No layer is present between cell wall and membrane of bacteria. A space is present between cell wall and plasma membrane, which is known as periplasm.
(2) Cell wall of bacteria is present below the glycocalyx and it is made of peptidoglycan.
(3) Glycocalyx does not have N-glycosylated proteins or glycoproteins.
