Detailed Solution

The word laterite has been derived from the Latin word ‘later' which means brick.
The laterite soil develops under tropical and subtropical climates with alternate wet and dry seasons. This soil is formed due to the intense leaching due to heavy rain. Laterite soils are primarily acidic and, hence, are very deficient in plant nutrients. It is one of the most valuable sources of soil used for building materials as it can be easily cut using a spade, and it is hard. This soil is rich in aluminium and iron and can be easily cut into bricks.
