The term liberalism derives from the Latin word liber meaning  "free."  In the early nineteenth-century liberal ideologies were strongly related to ideas of national unification in Europe. For the new middle classes, liberalism represented individual freedom and fairness for all people under the law. Politically, it emphasised the idea of consent-based governance. Since the French Revolution, liberalism has advocated for representative governance through the parliament, a constitution, and an end to despotism and ecclesiastical privileges.
