Detailed Solution

The term old regime was used to describe the society and institutions of France before 1789.
From the late Middle Ages (about 1500) until the French Revolution, which began in 1789, the Old Regime served as the political and social structure of the Kingdom of France. It ended the hereditary monarchy in 1790 and eliminated the feudal system of the French nobles (1792). The phrase describes earlier comparable feudal institutions in other parts of Europe, such as Switzerland. Through years of state establishment, enactment of the legislation, and internal struggles, the administrative and social systems of the old Régime in France developed. While the French nobles sought to preserve their rights regarding local administration and justice, old Régime France remained a land of systemic abnormalities despite the idea of "absolute monarchy" and attempts to construct a centralised state.
