The term 'The Great Purge' is associated with Stalin. From 1923 to 1953, Joseph Stalin ruled the Soviet Union. Under his leadership, the Soviet Union was transformed from an agricultural nation into an industrial and military power. Due to his efforts to reform the Soviet economy during his tenure, millions of lives were lost. In the Soviet Union in the late 1930s, there were a number of private trials in addition to three well-publicised trials known as "The Great Purge." Many former Bolshevik Party members were found guilty of treason and sentenced to prison or death. Later, it was found that many of the accused were innocent. The secret police made up the cases, and confessions were obtained through coercion and intimidation.
