Large states' rise altered the makeup of Gond society. The Gond rajas granted land grants to Brahmanas, which helped them gain power. The Gond chiefs now wanted their status as Rajputs to be recognised. The Gond ruler of Garha Katanga, Aman Das, adopted the name Sangram Shah as a result. Dalpat, his son, wed the princess Durgawati. But Dalpat passed away too soon. Being exceedingly competent, Rani Durgawati began to rule on behalf of Bir Narain, her five-year-old son. The kingdom expanded much further during her rule. Asaf Khan's Mughal army assaulted Garha Katanga in 1565. Rani Durgawati put up an adamantic fight. She was defeated and would sooner die than give up. Soon after, her son too passed away from combat.
