The top two cotton producing states are - Maharashtra and Gujarat. Besides these, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh are the main cotton-producing states. Gujarat is the state with the second-largest area under cotton cultivation after Maharashtra. In 2008–2009, cotton production in the nation averaged 526 kilogrammes per hectare, compared to the global average of 764 kg per hectare. Nearly 60% of the cotton-growing land in India receives rainwater. The highest cotton yields were recorded in Gujarat (633 kg) and Karnataka (670 kg) in 2008–09.
