Gujarat's Surat is located along the River Tapti.
During the Middle Ages, Surat was an important harbour and commerce centre. Numerous ships from different nations anchored in Surat, according to Duarte Barbosa. Surat, a commercial town, developed into a significant economic hub known for various kinds of textiles, mainly cotton textiles, during the Mughal era. The artisans made fine cotton with borders in the "Zari" style. These were shipped to markets in Europe and West Asia. In 1612, the English established a commercial post in Surat. However, the Dutch and the French came after them. Surat's location was also beneficial to its development. From here, ships used to go to Mecca carrying pilgrims on the Hajj.
