Detailed Solution

The Turkish sultan, or Khalifa, was subjected to a harsh treaty by the British after World War One. As a result, the Khilafat movement was started by Mohammad Ali and Shaukat Ali in India. The Ottoman Empire was destroyed by the British during the First World War. The Sultan of Turkey lost all authority. Muslims looked up to the caliph as their spiritual leader. Any deterioration in the caliph's status was regarded to have an impact on Muslim sentiment. As a result, the Khilafat movement was started by the Muslim population in India.
