The two main types of democracy are direct and representative. In contrast to indirect or representative democracy, direct democracy, usually referred to as pure democracy, is a way for citizens to participate directly in democratic decision-making. Direct democracies can function through a citizen assembly, referendums, and initiatives, in which voters cast ballots for proposals rather than for individuals or political parties. Representative democracy is a system of administration in which the people of the nation elect some or all of the highest-ranking officials. On behalf of the populace, elected officials are responsible for establishing laws and taking executive actions. Indirect democracy is another name for representative democracy. This is due to the fact that individuals do not directly create laws or choose policies. On the other hand, direct democracy is a form of government in which individuals directly elect representatives to make laws and policies.
