In honeybees, the sex determination of the offspring is based on the concept of haplodiploidy, in which the sex of the offspring is determined by the number of sets of chromosomes that it receives. An offspring formed from a fertilised egg develops into a female (queen or worker). An unfertilised egg, on the other hand, develops into a male (drone) through a process called parthenogenesis. Males are haploid while females are diploid. All the gametes are haploid. Queen (diploid) produces ova through meiosis. Drones (haploid) produce sperms through mitosis.
