Detailed Solution

The unification of Italy took place between 1859 to 1870. The emergence of nationalism in Europe led to the unification of many countries, including Italy. Before unification, Italy was scattered over several dynastic states. Italy was divided into seven states, and only one state was ruled by an Italian princely house in Sardinia-Piedmont. The northern part was under the control of Austrian Habsburgs, and the central part was ruled by the Pope, and the southern part was under the control of the Bourbon kings of Spain. Sardinia-Piedmont, with the alliance of France, defeated the Austrian forces. Later they captured other parts as well. In 1861 Victor Emmanuel II  was proclaimed the king of united Italy.
