The unification of Italy took place in 1861 when Victor Emmanuel II was made the new king of Italy. To unify Italy in 1830, a program was put up by Giuseppe Mazzini, whose goal was the creation of a secret society called Young Italy. However, after the failure of the revolutionary uprising, the responsibility of unifying Italy fell on the shoulders of ruler Victor Emmanuel II of Sardinia-Piedmont. Sardinia-Piedmont defeated the Austrian forces in 1859 after forming a diplomatic alliance with the French. Under Garibaldi, a large number of volunteers marched into the kingdoms of Sicily and south Italy to drive out Spanish forces from the southern regions of Italy in 1860. Later, Victor Emmanuel II was made the new king of Italy.
