The Universities established in 1857 were Calcutta, Bombay, Madras. Three Universities were established to focus on university education in India. These institutions were set up based on the recommendations of Wood's Despatch of 1854, which focused on improving the moral character of the Indians. It believed that European learning could make Indians loyal to colonial rule. It would help to generate loyal civil servants for the company rule.
