Detailed Solution

The university that established the statues of John Carlos and Tommie Smith is San Jose State University. At the Olympics held in Mexico City in 1968, two African-American athletes, John Carlos and Tommie Smith drew the international community's attention to the racial discrimination that was happening in America based on the colour of their skin. They did this through their gestures to symbolise black power and black poverty in the United States of America. Racial discrimination against the black population by the whites living in the US was a big problem at that time. Since the two athletes stood up against this social evil in society and were even former students of their university, to honour them, in 2005, San Jose State University installed a 200-foot statue on their campus.
