Detailed Solution

The US is an example of a two-party system.
The Democrats and the Republicans are the only two significant political parties in the United States. In the US, a candidate wins the election by receiving a plurality or more votes than any other candidate. These parties have a duopoly, which means they share practically all of the political power in the nation. Because there is no compensation for the party or candidate that places second, this is a winner-take-all system. Parties strive to have a sizable membership, bridging disparities between candidates and voters. A party that constantly receives support but cannot win elections has little reason to form. As a result, just as the Democrats and the Republicans predominate, two political parties often dominate plurality electoral systems at the expense of smaller third parties.
