The use of iron began in the subcontinent around 3000 years ago.
The increase in the number of tools made of iron was witnessed around 2500 years ago. The central region of India is suggested to be the earliest iron-using centre. Around 1300 to 1000 BC the pieces of evidence of smelted iron being used in India were found, mostly around the central Ganga Plains and Eastern Vindhyas. In Sumer, Akkad, and Assyria the Mesopotamian states the usage of iron dates back to 3000 years. The earliest smelted iron artefact, the dagger with an iron blade was found in Hattic tomb Anatolia around 2500 years ago.
