The first successful smallpox vaccine was launched in 1796 by Edward Jenner . He observed that cowpox-infected milkmaids were immune to smallpox, and that injected vaccinia protected against variola virus inoculation.

He proved that viruses of the same family can be used to prepare vaccines as they are very effective against diseases.
