Detailed Solution

Let a and β be the roots of equation

x2(a2)xa1=0

Then, α+β=a2 and αβ=a1

Now, α2+β2=(α+β)22αβ

 α2+β2=(a2)2+2(a+1)

    α2+β2=a22a+6    α2+β2=(a1)2+5

The value of α2+β2 will be least, if a1=0

 a=1

Alternate Method

Let α and β be the roots of the equation x2(92)x91=0

Then, α+β=(a2)

and αβ=a1

Let f(a)=α2+β2=(α+β)22αβ

=(a2)2+2(a+1)=a22a+6 f(a)=2a2

For maxima or minima,  put f(a)=0

 2a2=0a=1

Now, f′′(a)=2

 f′′(1)=2>0

So, f(a) is minimum at a=1
