Given rectangle is,

We know that, in rectangle opposite sides are parallel and equal to each other. Then from figure,

x + 3 y = 13

… (1)

3 x + y = 7

… (2)
From equation (2),

y = 7 - 3 x

… (3)
Putting the value of

y

in equation (1) we get,

x + 3 y = 13

\Rightarrow x + 3 (7 - 3 x) = 13

\Rightarrow x + 21 - 9 x = 13

\Rightarrow 21 - 13 = 9 x - x

\Rightarrow 8 = 8 x

\Rightarrow x = \frac{8}{8}

∴ x = 1

Now, putting the value of y in equation (3),

⇒ y = 7 − 3 x ⇒ y = 7 − 3 (1) ⇒ y = 7 − 3 ∴ y = 4
