The song "Vande Mataram", a song to the motherland, was written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay. This poem (song or hymn) was written in highly Sanskritised Bengali in 1870. This poem was included in his famous book (Bengali novel) Anandmath, published in 1882. Rabindranath Tagore first sang the hymn in 1896 at the session of the Indian National Congress. It became a popular marching song for political activism and the Indian freedom movement in 1905. After the independence of India on January 24, 1950, the Constituent Assembly adopted "Vande Mataram" as the national song of India.
