Detailed Solution

The Vernacular Press Act on Indian press was passed in 1878.
Since the goal of this law was to stifle subversive writing by Indians that opposed British policies in India, it did not apply to publications in the English language. As a result, the British levelled numerous charges against press freedom to censor Indian publications. The legislation gave the government the authority to monitor vernacular newspapers periodically and restrict the portions primarily written against them for the British to suppress the opposition to their policies in India.
