The very first event in photosynthesis is photoexcitation of chlorophyll molecules. There is absorption of photons (light energy) by chlorophyll and other pigments present in the chloroplasts. This absorbed light energy excites electrons within the chlorophyll molecules, raising them to higher energy levels. This process occurs in the thylakoid membranes of the chloroplasts.
