The Virashaiva movement began in Karnataka. Basavanna, Allama Prabhu, and Akkamahadevi were the founders of the Virashaiva movement. During the 12th century, this movement started in Karnataka as a response to the Tamil Bhakti movement. The Virashaivas opposed the building of new temples and the worship of idols. The Virashaivas made a strong case for the equality of all people and opposed Brahmanical views on caste and women.
