Visual acuity is the greatest at the fovea centralis (central fovea). It is a thinned-out portion of the retina where only the cones are densely packed. In addition, the layers of bipolar and ganglion cells, which scatter light to some extent, do not cover the cones here; these layers are displaced to the periphery of the fovea centralis. As a result, the fovea centralis is the area of highest visual acuity or resolution (sharpness of vision).
