The frequency of the voice depends upon the length of the vocal cord. The shorter the vocal cord, the more frequency; hence, the voice shrill. Due to the difference in the length of vocal cords, the sounds produced by the three are different. Females have shorter vocal cords – typically between

long. Females have small vocal tracts and longer and thinner vocal cords; this gives their voices a naturally higher frequency. In addition to being longer, the male vocal folds are also thicker, primarily because the muscle within the vocal folds (i.e., thyroarytenoid muscle) is thickened by testosterone during puberty.
