The war of Kalinga changed Ashoka’s attitude towards war. Kalinga, currently known as Orissa, was an important territory for the expansion of the Maurya empire. Ashoka headed to conquer the parts of Kalinga, wherein the bloodshed and violence deeply moved him. Over a lakh people were killed during the war, leaving thousands injured. After the Kalinga war, he decided not to fight any more battles. Instead, he decided to preach and observe dhamma and claimed it to be a better conquering force than war and conflicts.
