Detailed Solution

The war of Kalinga filled Ashoka with sorrow and he gave up fighting wars.
The Coastal Orissa region was known as Orissa in ancient times. After eight years of his reign, Ashoka fought a war to conquer Kalinga. In this contest, armies killed over a lakh people and captured about a lakh and a half. However, the violence and bloodshed horrified him and gave him deep sorrow, so he decided not to fight any more wars and became the only king in history to give up conquest after winning. Ashoka, through inscriptions, declared his decision and pointed out that clashes among rajas kill lakhs of people, and many get captured, including Brahmins and monks. He announced that he would not indulge in combat and would observe dhamma and spread it. Ashoka believed winning people over through dhamma was much better than conquering them through force.
