Detailed Solution

The whites used to live in white towns. Black Town and White Town were the two types of towns under British rule. White Town was home to Europeans like the British and Portuguese, while Black Town was home to labourers, carpenters, and other members of the black community. After the company erected its factory there in Madras in 1639, weavers and merchants were attracted to the coast north of Fort St. George and settled in what became known as "Black Town." They were from a variety of other south Indian cities. To the north of Fort St. George in George Town is a booming business center of modern Chennai. The town was also referred to as "Channapatna" by the neighborhood and was dubbed the "black town" since many of the locals worked as weavers and dyers.
