Detailed Solution

The widespread protests due to the government’s decision to implement the recommendations of the Mandal Commission led to a case named Indira Sawhney v Union of India in the supreme court.
Many cases are being filed in the Supreme Court and the High Courts by several persons and organisations. These cases were filed to stop the implementation of the government order by declaring it invalid. All these cases were bunched together by the Supreme Court in a case called Indira Sawhney v Union of India. In this case, a bench of eleven judges per majority held the order to be valid but instructed the government to modify it so that well-to-do people from the backward classes were excluded from getting the benefits of reservation. Subsequently, the government modified its order, thus ending the dispute.
