Detailed Solution

Concept:.The endoplasmic reticulum is a network of membranes within the cell that allows proteins and other molecules to move.

In the cytoplasm of cells, there is a network of sac-like structures and tubes (gel-like fluid). Proteins and other substances are transported by the endoplasmic reticulum.

The outer surface of the endoplasmic reticulum may be smooth or rough. The ribosomes in the rough endoplasmic reticulum create proteins for the cell.

The smooth endoplasmic reticulum produces lipids (fats) and carbohydrates, as well as other compounds necessary by the cell (sugars). The endoplasmic reticulum is a cellular organelle.
