The work of craftspersons of Bidar came to be known as Bidri.
Bidar is a town in the present Indian state of Karnataka. Bidar's craftspeople were so well-known for their inlay work in copper and silver that it was named Bidri. The Vishwakarma or Panchalas community, consisting of blacksmiths, goldsmiths, bronze smiths, carpenters, and masons, was integral to constructing temples. They also had a significant role in building palaces, tanks, large buildings, and reservoirs. Temples of those times were beautiful, but for building and maintenance, craftspersons were necessary. Stones had to be carved out, and gold and inlay work had to be done. Rulers could not build and maintain such large and magnificent temples. Only specialised people, such as skilled craftsmen, could be entrusted with the job.
