The world first learned about the Nazi death campaigns, widely known as the Holocaust, after Germany was defeated in World War II.
Between 1933 and 1945, the Nazi German government and its allies and accomplices persecuted and murdered six million European Jews on a systematic, state-sponsored basis. Information on the Nazi policies poured out of Germany during the government's closing years. But it wasn't until the war was finished and Germany had been defeated that the world realised the horrors of what had happened. Jews wanted the world never to forget the Holocaust, as it is commonly called, which was a series of Nazi execution campaigns. The records left behind by those who lived in ghettos and concentration camps and maintained journals, notes, and archives provide the majority of knowledge about the Holocaust.
