In addition, dues and taxes from the feudal system made life difficult for peasants. As a result, widespread poverty was caused by either an increase in food prices or a poor harvest year. One such year was the year, 1848. Due to food shortages and severe unemployment, Paris's populace took to the streets. Eventually, Louis Philippe was forced to flee, and France was declared a Republic.
