The Public distribution system is part of the Indian food security system.
It is a system of scarcity through distributing food grains at affordable prices. The Central and State governments operate this system jointly. For distribution, commodities like wheat, rice, and sugar are handed over to states and UTs. The centre procures these commodities from farmers at Minimum Support Prices (MSP) and then sells them to the states at predetermined prices. States then take the responsibility of transporting them to ration shops or fair price shops.
