There are three levels of courts in the Indian judicial system. The first level is the apex court of justice, known as the Supreme Court. The second level is the high courts at the state level and in the Union Territories. The third level is the subordinate courts at the district and town or village levels. The high courts are the highest courts in the state and union territories. They also hear appeals from the lower courts and handle matters and disputes concerning the people of a specific state. The subordinate courts are of three types; the district courts, which function at the district level; the Lok Adalats at the village level; and the tribunals, which mainly handle tax cases, land cases, etc.
