There are three types of important pipeline transportation networks in India. The first is from the oil fields in upper Assam to Kanpur. The second is from Salaya in Gujarat to Jalandhar in Punjab. The third is the 1,700 km long Hazira-Vijaipur-Jagdishpur (HVJ) cross-country gas pipeline. The pipeline transport network is a new concept in India's transportation system, and the initial cost of laying these pipelines is very high. Previously, these pipelines were used to transport water to cities and industries; now, they are used to transport crude oil, petroleum products, and natural gas from oil and natural gas fields to big thermal power plants, refineries, and fertiliser factories.
