There are specific laws and policies for the marginalisation of our country. Many rules and guidelines are made and added to the constitution from time to time to safeguard the interests of marginalised sections and for their upliftment in society. Article 17 of the Indian Constitution abolished untouchability and declared it a punishable offence. Untouchability was ill-treatment given to the Dalit community by stopping them from going to temples, enjoying public facilities, and living in main residential areas. This social evil was a danger to the fundamental rights of the Dalit community. In 1989, the Prevention of Atrocities Act was developed to protect marginalised sections like SC/ST and Dalits. Many activities mentioned in the act are considered a crime in the eyes of the law and are punishable offences. For example, they were forcing any SC/ST caste member to eat or drink any offensive or unhygienic substance.
