Erythroblastosis foetalis, also known as haemolytic disease of the newborn, is a condition that occurs when there is an incompatibility between the blood types of a mother and her foetus. This can happen if the mother is Rh-negative and the foetus is Rh-positive.
If a Rh-negative woman carries Rh-positive foetus for the first time, there is no high risk of erythroblastosis fetalis, since the woman’s immune system has not yet been sensitised to the Rh factor.
If an Rh-negative woman carries an Rh-positive foetus for the second time, there is a high risk of erythroblastosis foetalis, as the mother’s immune system may have already been sensitised during the first pregnancy and may produce a stronger immune response against the foetal red blood cells.
