Alauddin Khalji, the ruler of the Delhi Sultanate from 1296 to 1316, oversaw a number of significant agrarian, fiscal, and land reforms in northern India. Through the confiscation of private holdings and the cancellation of land concessions, he redeclared vast tracts of land as crown territory. By eliminating the middleman village leaders, he levied a 50% kharaj tax on agricultural products and directed his ministry to collect the money from the peasants directly. Regardless of the size of the land, each individual peasant's holding was subject to a land tax equal to half the produce (in weight or value), which was to be augmented by a home and cattle tax. Alauddin Khilji levied numerous taxes during his reign, including the Jizya tax, Gharai tax, and Zakat. These taxes brought in a lot of money. Alauddin expected to keep a huge armed force.
