There were frequent clashes between weavers and gomasthas. Previously, supply merchants lived in weaving villages and had strong relationships with the weavers, tending to their needs and assisting them in times of crisis. The new gomasthas were outcasts with no long-term social ties to the village. They were haughty, marched into villages with sepoys and peons, and punished weavers for supply delays by whipping and flogging them. The weavers lost the ability to bargain for pricing and sell to many purchasers since the price they received from the Company was pathetically low, and the loans they had accepted bound them to the Company.
